Russia’s Emerging Holy War

The XX Committee

At the beginning of this week, President Barack Obama explained that Russia, hit hard by Western sanctions, is losing in its confrontation with the West and NATO caused by Vladimir Putin’s aggression in Ukraine. In his State of the Union address, Obama displayed similar swag and bluster against both the Kremlin and Congressional Republicans, seemingly without regard for any recent events. As the President explained:

We’re upholding the principle that bigger nations can’t bully the small — by opposing Russian aggression, supporting Ukraine’s democracy and reassuring our NATO allies. Last year, as we were doing the hard work of imposing sanctions along with our allies, some suggested that Mr. Putin’s aggression was a masterful display of strategy and strength. Well, today, it is America that stands strong and united with our allies, while Russia is isolated, with its economy in tatters. That’s how America leads — not with bluster, but with…

Bureaucracy Keeps Doing Its Thing

The XX Committee

On the weekend, The New York Times ran an interesting story about how U.S. Army Major General Michael Nagata, the commander of our Special Operations Forces (SOF) in the Middle East, has been reaching out to experts far beyond the Pentagon, the Intelligence Community (IC), and the U.S. Government altogether, to better understand what drives the Islamic State. Since that war is clearly not going very well, and MG Nagata’s elite forces form the point of the spear there, listening to alternative voices is always commendable. As NYT noted:

Business professors, for example, are examining the Islamic State’s marketing and branding strategies. “We do not understand the movement, and until we do, we are not going to defeat it,” [Nagata] said, according to the confidential minutes of a conference call he held with the experts. “We have not defeated the idea. We do not even understand the idea.”

Is a Top American Diplomat a Russian Agent?

Desinformation oder Enttarnung? Der Kreml wird mit dem Gerücht jedenfalls ganz gut leben (und arbeiten) können.

The XX Committee

Today the Ukrainian news website GORDON ran an interview with the Russian businessman and sometime politician Konstantin Borovoy. A harsh critic of Vladimir Putin — he recently said Russia’s president is „mentally unstable“ while a year ago he pronounced the collapse of Putin’s corrupt dictatorship to be „inevitable“ — Borovoy is something of a gadfly. A parliamentarian of independent views in the Yeltsin era, he served as an intermediary between Moscow and the rebels in the First Chechen War, and was assessed as „a respected and influential Duma deputy“ by one savvy Western expert, in part due to his staunch opposition to the takeover of Russia by the „special services,“ especially the Federal Security Service (FSB), during the Putin years.

Hence Borovoy’s statements are not to be rejected out of hand as the ravings of a madman. In the GORDON interview, he lambasts Ukraine’s government for having faith…

Col. Girkin: a Full Dossier

Lesen bildet.

Christo's blog

Even though I wrote an exhaustive series on Girkin, there seems to some confusion (based on my review of Reddit discussions on the topic) about the his real background and whether or not he did work for the FSB (he did), or participated in the wars he said he did (he did).

I am attaching a full dossier on Girkin,  which I had not published until now, in order to not to interfere with the international criminal investigation on him.  Please note that it does not include the latest events, such as for instance the arrest of Olga Kulygina 10 days ago.

Read the dossier here:  Igor Vsevolodovich Girkin
